A GREAT deal of energy has gone into giving the Macmillan Cancer Support shop in Tavistock a facelift. More than 30 volunteers from Exeter-based office energy company EDF have worked in relays during the past two weeks in transforming, redecorating and restocking the charity shop at The Old Dairy in Paddons Row. Their work culminated on Tuesday week with the reopening of the shop, resulting in a more modern looking, light and airy so that volunteers can carry on raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Trevor Cotter, heading the EDF volunteer team and who normally works in the company's revenue management, said: 'Workers from our Exeter office had already raised £300 for the materials and each member also donated an item of clothing or two to help provide new stock. 'We were happy to help for such a good cause. We don't normally do large projects like this but we wanted a new challenge that was something a bit different.' Tavistock stores Focus DIY, Jewson and Fairway Furniture also made donations to the store. Jenny Howell, chair of Macmillan's fundraising committee in Tavistock, said. 'I am delighted that we are getting a helping hand from EDF. They have completely repainted, put in new changing rooms and shelving and, most importantly, brought in new stock. We then can carry on with our volunteers running the shop for the benefit of those whose lives are affected by cancer.' Judith Jolly, local fundraising manager added: 'Our volunteers have kept the shop running well for many years, on a regular basis and it is a new and exciting departure that we are working with a company on such a concentrated basis.' Judith thanked the EDF team for their help and praised all those shop volunteers who work there throughout the year to raise money to back all the Macmillan support services provided for those with cancer. l The grand re-opening is pictured above.
