THE fate of Tavistock?s crumbling parkland bandstand will go under the spotlight yet again later this month, when the town council discusses alternative uses for the ageing building.

The bandstand, a focal point in the Meadows, needs repairs estimated at almost £10,000. A proposal to demolish the building was shelved last month, after councillors agreed it should remain in situ until the spring, when an event had already been booked to take place at the site.

But at Tuesday?s council meeting, Tavistock resident John Hooper suggested a new use for the building.

He said: ?Could I respectfully suggest it may, with minor works, be converted to replace the (snack) kiosk? It would be a far better facility for the town.?

Cllr Ted Sherrell, who originally proposed the bandstand should be demolished, said he was not ?hell-bent on knocking it down? and was impressed with the idea which could provide the bandstand with a practical use.

The council agreed to look at alternative uses for the bandstand at the next properties committee meeting, supported by input from the works superintendent.
