BAT's Badminton Club B team started off their 2001/2 campaign in the Plymouth and District Badminton League with a convincing win over newcomers Devonshire 9-0.
The BAT's ladies, Tamsin Woodroffe, Elizabeth Rae and Rebecca Ward, despite their youth, proved too powerful for their inexperienced opponents, winning all three doubles rubbers without conceding more than seven points in any game. The men, Paul Bitton, Michael Ward and Ewen Rae, emulated the ladies by winning all three of their doubles rubbers.
The new mixed doubles pairings of Paul Bitton and Elizabeth Rae; Ewen Rae and Tamsin Woodroffe; Michael and Rebecca Ward continued the excellent start with the ladies dominating the net play. All three pairings won comfortably. It was a successful league debut for Rebecca Ward and a big confidence boost for the four players aged under 19.
BAT's Badminton Club A team travelled to Torpoint for their second league match. With Torpoint having been demoted at the end of last season they were keen to start the new season with a win.
In the men's doubles, only the pairing of Alan Berry and David Harrington won with the Torpoint pairs having to work hard to take the other rubbers against Alan Berry and Ewen Rae and David Harrington and Ewen Rae.
The BAT's ladies' doubles pairs also found the Torpoint ladies hard to beat but Susie Povey and Heather Cooper showed the BAT's ladies how to win. The other two ladies' doubles rubbers went to three ends with Susie Povey and Glynis Hingston then Heather Cooper and Glynis Hingston ending up on the losing side.
In the mixed doubles rubbers, Alan Berry and Susie Povey got BAT's off to a winning start with a difficult three-ender.
Ewen Rae and Glynis Hingston then found the Torpoint pair too good and though they played well they eventually lost out in the rubber.
The final rubber of the evening proved to be one of the closest with David Harrington and Heather Cooper having to come back from losing the first game narrowly to just winning the setting in the second then only winning the deciding game in the last few points.
In the end BAT's A team came away having lost the match 4-5 but with the knowledge that Torpoint still had to travel to Bere Alston for the return match.
