FOR THE first time in almost two decades a trade association has been set up in Callington to promote the town centre.

The idea was spearheaded by the town's portreeve Karen Gold when she took over the role in May last year.

It has been given more emphasis since the arrival of Tesco and the opposition by local traders to the proposed increase in parking charges and a one-way system.

Chairman of the new group Gail Buttery said an association would give the town traders a voice and strength in numbers: 'It has been something that has been needed for a long time and it has taken the parking and one-way system to get everyone together and talking.

'It gave people the motivation to set up this organisation and we are a very enthusiastic group of traders who want to get all the businesses on board to raise awareness and promote the town centre.'

With all the additional custom Callington is getting though shoppers visiting the Tesco store in Tavistock Road, which opened last August, businesses want to make the town as attractive as possible to encourage people down into the main shopping centre.

Mrs Buttery said creating floral displays in the summer, holding special events and promotions, better advertising and signage and working with the town council and town forum were all ideas being talked about.

'We want to encourage people into the town centre so they can see how much there is on offer here,' she said. 'We have excellent specialist shops who offer a very personal service. Staff have the time, patience and knowledge to advise shoppers, which is something you cannot get online.'

So far around 14 businesses have signed up to the trade group but it is hoped a lot more will add their names to the list.

Members met Cornwall councillor Andrew Long this week to discuss traffic management around the town and to push for an increase in short term parking bays.

Antique shop owner Chris Saunders said he was all for starting up a trade association again to help the town: 'We are like many other towns which are facing competition from the big supermarkets — we have to do all we can to protect our businesses.

'It will be good to get new blood and new ideas and see what happens from that.'

The first meeting will be held on February 7 at 5.30pm in Callington Town Hall.
