THE new Wutan Kung Fu club in Tavistock has had its first success. Michelle Pole, a teacher from Tavistock who has been training in Kung Fu for only a few months won a bronze medal. She managed to beat off most of the stiff competition of over 40 women in the ladies? division of the Wutan National Championships held in Southampton. It was Michelle?s first ever entry into a competition that attracts competitors from all over the UK. She travelled with fellow competitors from her main club in Plymouth on a long 3-hour journey fighting atrocious weather conditions to compete. Her club mates from Plymouth also scooped up a gold in the men?s semi-contact division, and Jamie Bennett-Ness from the Pee Wee division fought for a winning silver in the weapons category. Ian Romans from the adults semi-contact section got a gold. The Wutan Club in Tavistock has been running for only two months at the Alexander Centre and currently meets on a Monday between 7pm and 8.30pm. With already a high demand, the club plans to expand and teach children and offer classes in Tai Chi in the New Year.
