LIFE size sculptures, pencil drawings, documentary film and photography celebrating the heritage of pony drifts on Dartmoor will be exhibited at Dartmoor National Parks Authority's High Moorland Visitor Centre in Princetown from tomorrow (Friday).
The showcase exhibition of the work of Meier Williams is being hosted by the national park authority as part of the celebrations of Dartmoor's 60th year as a national park.
Meier has worked extensively in recyclable and natural materials to create a range of different art forms capturing the energy and importance of the drifts to the Dartmoor community.
Dartmoor farmer, Neil Cole, said: 'As far as we know, nobody has documented the Dartmoor ponies over a period of time.
'The annual drifts bring all the farmers together.
'Although the management of the ponies on the moor will never change, the autumn drifts, will change to a degree.
'What has become a way of life over many generations of farming families, with ponies running on Dartmoor common land, is not likely to remain the same.
'Meier's documenting our way of farming will inform my great grand children and help them see and understand the work we have done.'
Meier has studied the Dartmoor pony drifts for the past three seasons and has captured their essence in her art.
Her film documentary work is put together with specially selected backing music adding atmosphere to the unfolding drama on the screen.
She has also been building up a new body of work in a range of media from pencil drawings to indoor and outdoor sculptures and from mono-prints to textile pieces.
In April this year, Meier started work building two life size pony sculptures, a mare and foal, utilising materials found on Dartmoor.
The sculptures will be displayed during the exhibition.
Meier's work will be exhibited at the Dartmoor Gallery, High Moorland Visitor Centre in Princetown from Friday, September 16 to October 26.
The centre is open daily from 10am to 5pm during September and 10am to 4pm throughout October.
