IT'S all change at the top for Tavistock Chamber of Commerce, as a new chairman was elected to take over the role at a meeting this week, along with the announcement that the treasurer and administrator would be standing down The vote for chairman was intended to take place in the chamber's July meeting but with only one member standing, Neal Taynton-Young was elected un-opposed. Mr Taynton-Young, of Fireproof PR, said: 'I am delighted to be in this new role and I hope to continue the good work that Nigel Eadie has done over the years.' He said he would be looking to develop new possibilities, particularly in expanding the chamber to the wider Tavistock district. 'I will start by looking at what we have been doing well and what we can improve on, then we can go onto the next steps in terms of what we can do as a chamber. I think the chamber is mis-represented as catering for just the centre of Tavistock. I know there are a lot of hidden gems and businesses around the Tavistock area who may not understand what the chamber does or how it could represent them.' As a start, Mr Taynton-Young said he would be working to get a greater understanding of the role, but would like to look at increasing membership and encouraging more involvement in the chamber from the current 91 members. 'Sometimes we have quite a passive membership — we should all be shouting from the top of the moors,' he said. The role of chairman became available after former chairman Nigel Eadie, of the Original Pasty House, stepped down from the role after five years due to no longer being able to attribute sufficient time to adequately fulfil the role. Also at the meeting chamber treasurer and administrator Graham Skedgell announced he would be standing down. He said after the meeting: 'I believe the time is right for me to stand down from my position both as treasurer and as administrator. I should like to express my thanks for allowing me to serve firstly as membership secretary, then as treasurer and later as administrator.' Nominations will now be sought for the positions and Mr Taynton-Young said he hoped they would be able to appoint people by July. 'I am saddened by Graham's decision, but I totally respect it and the good work he has accomplished,' he said.
