A LACK of volunteers could result in the permanent closure of Okehampton Youth Club unless helpers come forward soon.

The club, which has run from the Ockment Community Centre for the last 20 years, has closed until further notice and committee members are desperate to recruit some new blood so they can open up again.

With the present leader on maternity leave and a lack of volunteers, chairman of the club Gary Cockburn said there was little choice but to close for the time being.

'The club is a valuable asset for Okehampton providing something for the 8-13-year-olds every Wednesday evening,' he said. 'We regularly have around 30 young people attending and it would be a great shame if it was to fold.'

The committee is appealing for parents or other members of the community, from 18-80, who could spare a couple of hours each week.

This is an unpaid position but the committee is willing to discuss, with suitable candidates, the possibility of putting them through relevant youth work courses.

It is also looking for new committee members as five are standing down at the next annual meeting. A member need only attend five meetings a year.
