THE 2007/08 season of the Okehampton & District Netball League began last week. This year the league will once again run three divisions after the success of starting the third division last year. It is hoped, say organisers, that this year will be as competitive as ever, with both the first and second division being closely contended. In the first division last year Falcons held onto their title with Speedwells coming second and Magpies third. The player of the season was given to Emma Donnelly of the Cheriton Flyers. Division two was competitive until the last match of the season, which eventually resulted in Hot Shots in first, Phoenix second and Jesters in third. Player of the season was Heather Smallacombe of Maltesers. FBI won division three, second were Pink Panthers and Sugar and Spice third. Player of the season was Lisa Butt of All Stars. The first matches of the season were played within division two. The teams were all keen to be back after the summer break and Sprites won 41-18 against newly promoted Pink Panthers. Newly promoted FBI won their match against Groovy Chicks 50 goals to 18. Dodgers won the third match against Jesters 38-24. Players of the match were awarded to: Pink Panthers, Sarah Jones; Sprites, Jo Drake; Groovy Chicks, Clare Parsons; FBI, Boo Colton; Dodgers, Helena Peters and Emma Cunnington for Jesters. The two teams who came up from division three had good matches and although Pink Panthers didn?t win they had a competitive first match back to be pleased with. l The league runs every Tuesday evening until April, with matches beginning at 7pm on the all-weather pitch and 7pm and 8.20pm in the Parklands Leisure Centre. Any supporters are most welcome.
