LYDFORD School last week hosted an afternoon of orienteering open to all the primary schools in the Okehampton Learning Community.

Eighty year 5 children from nine different schools spent a wonderful sunny afternoon learning about the exciting sport of orienteering. They were introduced into how to locate their position on a map, then moved on to using those skills to navigate around a simple course.

The afternoon culminated in the children having the chance to try a competitive orienteering course around the school grounds for a chance to win the Lydford orienteering trophy.

The winners were pupils from Boasley Cross Primary, who managed to get all the controls correct in the shortest time — they narrowly beat two teams from Chagford Primary, who took the second and third spots.

The organisers expressed thanks to everyone who helped and the children for making it such a fun afternoon.
