A MOUNTAIN of rubbish will be piled onto Bedford Square in Tavistock this Saturday ? a graphic illustration of what goes into landfill sites after just one year of disposable nappy changing.
The rubbish mountain is part of a ?green? nappy roadshow, held to show parents and parents-to-be that new, modern re-usable nappies provide an easy and economic alternative to disposable ones.
Gone are the days of struggling with complicated folds and enormous safety pins ? modern re-usable nappies come in a variety of easy-to-use designs which are shaped and fit just like disposables, complete with simple Velcro fasteners.
There will be a range of real nappies on display at the roadshow, with advice on how to use them ? and a competition to win a birth-to-potty supply of modern nappies.
The roadshow has been staged by West Devon Borough Council in conjunction with Devon Authorities waste reduction and recycling committee.
A spokesman for the council said: ?Experts estimate that a baby wearing disposable nappies creates one black bag full per week ? and that disposable nappies could take hundreds of years to decompose in landfill sites.?
The council hopes the ?nappy mountain? on the square will highlight this fact and encourage parents to switch to reusable nappies.
The roadshow will be held between 10am and 4pm ? for more information on reusable nappies, go to http://www.recycledevon.org">www.recycledevon.org or phone 0845 4502477.
