TIMES readers are being asked to have a 'paws for thought' moment and come up with suggestions for a brand new name to adorn a pet shop in Tavistock.

For the past 17 years the well known shop in West Street has been 'Georgina's Pet Supplies', but following the retirement of Georgina Elias, new owner Debbie Walsh has now taken over the reins.

Debbie's love for animals is evident as she has menagerie of her own — three horses, two dogs, two cats, two guinea pigs, two gerbils, chickens and some fish at her Weir Quay home.

Debbie, 41, is really looking forward to her new venture. For the past five and a half years she has been a special needs teacher at Chelfham Senior School at Kilworthy. She also has a degree in animal care and agriculture from Writtle College in Essex.

Debbie said: 'I wanted a change and be my own boss. I was brought up in a retail environment and my dad still works in his shop and he's 78!' Taking over Georgina's Pet Supplies is something that I did on instinct and I am now really looking forward to running the shop.

'I want to say a big thank you to our customers and local businesses who have been fantastic with their support, good luck cards and best wishes, I would really like to thank Georgina who has been a big help in the transition of me taking over and I wish her all the best to enjoy her deserved retirement.'

Debbie has a willing 'partner' who will be assisting her in the shop. Maggie, her six month-old yellow Labrador is a much loved member of staff, modelling leads and collars for customers — all for the price of some dog biscuits.

To celebrate the relaunch Debbie is holding a competition with prizes for suggesting the best name (the winner will receive a store pet voucher) and the funniest name. Simply put your answer on a postcard with your name, address and number and drop it into the pet shop at 2, West Street. Entries must be in by Tuesday, November 20. The winner will be announced on Dickensian evening on Friday, November 30.
