AN explosion and fire this week complely destroyed a workshop in the Fitzford Cottages area of Tavistock. The town?s two fire crews attended the scene at 3am on Monday, but fire chief Tim Smith said the building had probably been on fire for several hours before the alarm was raised. Mr Smith said: ?It was the explosion that alerted people living in the area. ?We don?t know what caused it ? whatever it was went bang and completely blew itself away.? Mr Smith said crews pumped water from the canal to extinguish the flames, but they were unable to save the workshop, which was ?100% destroyed?. The firefighters eventually left the area at 6am. Police were called to the scene and an investigation into the cause of the blaze is continuing.
