A FORMER Tavistock College student has gained a place at one of the most prestigious schools in the UK.

After battling through several rounds of auditions against hundreds of budding performers, Richard Brindley was offered a place by the Royal Academy of Music in London, on a full-time programme to train in musical theatre.

Richard is no stranger to the process of auditioning however, after successfully becoming a member of the National Youth Theatre in 2007.

Having been made offers from two other top schools, Richard was delighted when the Royal Academy of Music offered him a much coveted place.

He said: 'I couldn't believe it! And I still can't quite believe it!

'There was a lot of talent at the auditions, but I can't wait to get started and am excited if not a little daunted at the prospect of it all.'

The course starts in September and so Richard has been busy fundraising for his big move to London. He has recently taken part in a sponsored horse ride across the Bere Peninsula, and is now preparing for his second fundraising event — a murder mystery evening.

'Murder in the Parish' will see Richard and a team of professional actors circulate among the public dropping clues and red herrings. Arguments will be had and secrets will be revealed.

Before the night is out it will be down to the guests to identify the culprit.

The event will take place on Saturday, August 17 at the Parish Centre in Tavistock, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £18.50 per person and include a two course hot and cold buffet, complimentary arrival drink and murder mystery entertainment (not suitable for under 14s). Tickets are available from Mainly Stationary in Tavistock.

Richard expressed thanks to all the people who have contributed to his fundraising efforts so far, including local businesses that have donated money and raffle prizes, as well as Tavistock College for its ongoing support.
