WEST Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett has pledged support for a new law to fight fuel poverty and winter deaths.
The Warm Homes Bill, which would create a national programme for installing energy efficient insulation and central heating systems in homes, gets its second reading in the House next Friday.
The private members Bill was introduced by David Amess MP — a large turn-out of MPs is needed for it to progress further.
John Burnett said: 'I was delighted two years ago to sponsor the energy efficiency bill, when I came sixth in the private members ballot.
'I strongly support the Warm Homes Bill, which will save money and most importantly, save lives and the environment — at little or no cost.'
The UK has one of the worst records for excess winter deaths in the developed world.
Studies have shown the UK death rate rises by 30 per cent during winter, while the figure is just ten per cent in Norway and Sweden, where temperatures are far lower.
Fuel poverty, a combination of low incomes and inefficient heating, can kill, with the elderly and young particularly at risk.
