RECENT government and county council announcements that show a joined approach to continuing support for those with dementia has delighted West Devon and Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox.
Devon County councillors have supported plans for up to ten centres of excellence for those with dementia — part of the £11.2-million investment into care homes across the country. The plans will see the redevelopment of existing homes, and refurbishment of others to ensure a centre of excellence standard can be met.
Mr Cox said: 'The county council's announcement will see in the region of 300 places being provided in facilities specifically designed to meet their needs.
'We need to be prepared for the future, and this is a sign of that commitment. People of Devon aged over 65 with dementia is anticipated to rise by approximately 10,000 between now and 2030, and I commend the council for taking up the reins on this issue and ensuring our people are supported.'
The announcement came just before Prime Minister David Cameron pledged his support to those with dementia through what is being referred to as the 'National Dementia Challenge'.
Mr Cox added: 'We need to make sure our level of diagnoses, treatments and research into cures is stepped up in line with the frequency at which dementia strikes families. I support fully the Prime Minister in his commitment to dramatically increase the research into cures and treatments for dementia.
