WEST Devon MP Geoffrey Cox was at Bere Ferrers recently to listen to group suggestions for the ?Trams to Tavistock? project. ?Trams to Tavistock? is hoping to develop a light tram line running from Tavistock to Bere Alston and then to Gunnislake to link with the heavy train line from Bere Alston to Plymouth. The main Plymouth to Bere Alston train runs, at the moment, every two hours. There are plans to increase it to every hour to meet the tram as it comes through Bere Alston on its way to Gunnislake. Co-ordinator of ?Trams to Tavistock? Chris Grove said Plymouth Road in Tavistock would be the likely destination for the tram line: ?The tram tracks will be hidden in the ground so cars will still be able to drive along the roads as normal. The procedure of laying the tracks can be done in less than a week.? Mr Grove has already spoken to the Federation of Small Businesses and the overall opinion was that it was an idea worth pursuing. Funding is being sought and it is hoped to secure European money through the Mining Heritage Bid. ?We would like to have something in place within the next five years but before we can go any further with these plans we need to know people?s opinions on this project.? If enough people respond a public meeting can then be arranged. To contact, e-mail Chris Grove on [email protected]">[email protected] or call on 01822 840044.
