WEST Devon MP John Burnett joined members of the Tavistock and District Mencap Society last Wednesday to explore the implications for people in West Devon of a Government White Paper entitled 'Valuing People'.
The document — launched earlier this year — states that people with learning disabilities 'are among the most socially excluded and vulnerable groups in Britain'. It affirms that people with learning disabilities 'should be able to do those ordinary things, make use of mainstream services and be fully included in local communities'. The four key principles are rights, choice, independence and inclusion.
Tina Feather, Mencap's district officer, said it was important people got involved and influenced how local services were delivered. 'Carers and people with a learning disability themselves need to raise the issues that affect them. In West Devon most adults with learning difficulties do not have jobs, day opportunities are being cut and social options are declining. Parents are desperately short of respite and have to fight for everything.'
John Burnett said the Government had signalled that it recognises that change is needed. 'It must not dash hopes by failing to promote and find decent opportunities and care for those with learning difficulties.
'Carers and those people in the voluntary and charitable sectors and social services who all give so much of their time must have the support they deserve.'
Spokesperson for Tavistock and District Mencap Ann Macdonald reinforced this view: 'The way we see it, carers struggle and juggle all the time. They need more support'.
There will be a meeting at County Hall in Exeter tomorrow (Friday) for those with a learning disability who would like to get involved and learn about the way they could influence services. Further information on this is available from Tina Feather on 01822 834811, who is also the contact for carers willing to involve themselves in meetings.
