A PETITION of more than 1,000 names to stop the demolition of Tavistock?s old folks? rest room was presented to West Devon and Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox on Saturday. Committee members and supporters of the facility, which has been offering a resting and meeting place for pensioners for over 50 years, met the MP to voice their concerns over the plans to knock down the building and redevelop the site for retail use. Chairman of the committee Janet Piper said Mr Cox was extremely supportive: ?He has agreed to support us with other ideas we have planned to keep the campaign in the public eye and he will be presenting the petition to the borough council,? she said. Mrs Piper said the option to redevelop the site was in the lease agreement between Tavistock Town Council and owners of the building Hunstrete Estates: ?All we can do is tug on their heart strings,? she said.
