A TOTAL of 128 adults and 84 children raced around the Meadows last Thursday, taking part in various races organised by Tavistock Athletic Club as part of Carnival Week?s Sports Day.
Proceedings started with a fun run which covered half the relay course, and this was won in fine style by James Barratt in 3 minutes 22 seconds, with Tess Osbourne second and Helena Rogers third.
Next was the junior relay run over the full 1.1 mile course. This was won by an outstanding U14 team from Lipson College in 25 minutes 19 seconds, with two U12 teams from Tavistock Athletic Club finishing in second and third.
Second were the Terrors, consisting of Rufus Gould, Charlie Hubbard, Laura Aspen and Rhys Dunford who took the U12 prize in 29 minutes 52 seconds, and close behind in third was the Magnificent Mary Tavy Mob, Reuben Grice, Morgan Beeley, Sally Grice and Nathan Wonnacott in 30 minutes 4 seconds.
The senior relay attracted 32 teams. As far as local teams were concerned, pride of place must go to Tavistock Hockey Club, whose ladies and mens teams won the local sports club categories.
The ladies were Fiona Dunn, Kath Collar, Emma Bowden and Sally Kilpatrick, who finished 21st in 27 minutes 36 seconds, and the men Rob Kirby, Phil Honey, Tom Honey and John Barratt who finished 13th in 25 minutes 36 seconds.
The swimming club also entered a team which finished a creditable 16th, and this consisted of Chris Ralph, Seb Lee, Paul Chinn and Tim Hussey in a time of 26 minutes 45 seconds.
The relay was won by Exmouth Harriers in 21 minutes 17 seconds for the 4.4 miles, with Plymouth Harriers second and Exmouth Harriers B team third.
Fourth, and winners of the veteran men?s trophy was a team from Tavistock AC: Martin Exley, Allan Herdman, Robin Musgrave and Richard Drage in a time of 22 minutes 51 seconds.
Another local team consisting of Stirling Way, David Northmore, Charlie Lloyd and Jerry Rickeard came fifth in 23 minutes 11 seconds representing Tamar Valley Hash House Harriers, and they were closely followed by the second Tavistock AC team the Odds and Sods, consisting of Chris Eastaugh, Mike Lewis, Adam Holland and Adam Tofield in 23 minutes 14 seconds, with the two Adams running particularly well.
The first ladies? team came from East Cornwall Harriers, and the first vet ladies? team from Plymouth Harriers.
Organiser Keith Bowles hopes a cheque for a substantial sum will come from the proceeds for the Devon Air Ambulance.
