TAVISTOCK, set to host the fifth stage of this year's Tour of Britain race, could be in line for some new cycle racks in the town centre.

Members of the town council's properties committee last week heard that the county council was keen to promote cycling as a green form of transport, and that there could be funding to get more cycle racks installed.

Cllr Anne Johnson said she had seen people pushing bikes around the town in an attempt to find somewhere to park them safely on several occasions recently, and that the lack of suitable racks was 'embarrassing'.

Cllr Brian Trew stressed that any new racks should be sited in a prominent place, preferably in the centre of town.

Cllr John Sellis suggested the council's works staff should survey where the existing racks were, and come up with proposals for suitable new areas — the proposal was backed by the committee.
