THE Moorland Ladies Summer Shield season came to a close at the Devon Tors, Yelverton, when the finals and presentation night was held, the presentation being made by the landlord, Pete Gibson.
The evening began, with the semi-finals of the doubles competition, the first being between Debbie Mills-Hicks and Lisa Miles of the Union Inn and Pauline Hoar and Sam Allen of the Leaping Salmon. It was determined when Debbie and Lisa were unable to attend, guaranteeing Pauline and Sam a place in the final.
The second semi saw Sheila Glanville and Sheila Liddicott of the Tavistock Hotel, Gunnislake, defeated in a 1-2 game against Mary Tavy Inn's Mary McLoughlin and Mo Penny.
The final played between Leaping Salmon and Mary Tavy Inn ladies saw Pauline and Sam take the match in a 2-0 victory.
The semi-finals of the singles were played between Penny Fry of the Duke of York and Lorraine Gover of Devon Tors Ladies, and Dawn Osborne of Devon Tors Ladies and Carolyn Jury of the Union Inn.
Victories by Penny and Carolyn secured their places in the final. After a hard-fought game, Penny emerged the eventual victor.
The play-off for the overall winners of the league was between Tavistock Hotel, winners of the first division, and second division winners, the Boot Inn.
It took the form of one game of four, two doubles and four singles, the first to four to determine the winner.
Tracey Evans, Jenny Edwards, Gill Lacey and Marlene Deacon of the Boot Inn, took the fours 2-0 from Molly Bickell, Pauline Courtis, Sheila Liddicott and Sheila Glanville of the Tavistock Hotel and followed with the two doubles games through Jenny and Tracey (2-0), and Gill and Marlene (2-0).
With three games up in the early stages, the girls from the Boot Inn looked unstoppable as they went into the singles games, and what could have been an early exit for the Tavistock Hotel team.
But Pauline Courtis defeated her opponent Gill Lacey by 2-1, and pulled a game back, despite Gill's magnificent scores of 142 and 120.
The pressure mounted as the match went into its second singles game, seeing Molly Bickell of Tavistock Hotel meet Tracey Evans from the Boot Inn. Despite a valiant effort, Molly was defeated on the final double of the final leg and the Boot Inn secured the title.
An excellent evening, with good support from all teams, was completed by the presentation of the trophies with a buffet supper.
Heartiest congratulations and thanks go to all teams for making it such a success. The teams can now relax for a couple of weeks until the winter season begins on September 19.
