THE succulent lawns of a Tavistock suburb proved too much of a temptation for an escaped cow last weekend.

The Friesian was spotted nosing open the garden gates of a house in Uplands Road during Sunday afternoon before settling down to a late lunch in the front garden.

Simon Hand, visiting his grandmother in the house opposite, said: 'She came walking up the road and turned into the driveway. She stayed there for a while then walked along a narrow path and sat down in the garden.'

It took police a couple of hours to find the cow's owner, who turned up about 4pm to return his truant to her field.
