DESERVING people in the Tavistock area could be boosted by a cash grant from the town's Business Association, also known as the 31 Club.

The club has been unable to donate surplus funds to good causes for several years — but at a recent meeting it was revealed that this year, finances are healthy enough to make a grant.

David Glover, 31 Club committee member, said the club members have decided to invite applications from individuals or groups who would benefit from a grant.

He said it could be a young person embarking on a gap year, a Duke of Edinburgh award event, someone planning to start their own business or perhaps a group needing funds to expand its activities.

Mr Glover said: 'Basically, we have not pre-judged what would make a good application — the book is wide open really.

'What we want to emphasise is we have set no guidelines, we just want to make sure the money goes to a good home.'

Mr Glover said applications will be welcomed from individuals or groups, aged 16-plus, from the Tavistock area.

Approximately £1,200 is available to be distributed by the club, which could go to just one person or a number of applicants.

If a number of applications are received, a selection procedure would be put in place and applicants would need to be interviewed by a panel from the club.

Anyone who believes they would benefit from financial support for a planned project should write with full details to R Spackman, secretary, Tavistock Business Association, The Old Stables, Paddons Row, Tavistock PL19 0HF.
