WORK has begun on an exciting new project to improve facilities at Okehampton Squash and Racquetball Club.

Over the next few weeks the club's courts, which are located in the grounds of Okehampton College, are being clad with modern insulation. As part of the works, the heating and hot water systems are also being modernised.

The project has been made possible thanks to a grant of £50,000 from Sport England's Inspired Facilities fund, part of the Places People Play Olympic and Paralympic legacy programme.

All improved facilities will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark celebrating the link to the games. More than 1,000 sports projects across the country have now received lottery funding through the scheme.

Club chairman Dennis Edwards said: 'This is the club's 40th anniversary this year, and the work going on is crucial for the club's ongoing viability and to attract new members.

'We are putting in a new energy-efficient boiler, which replaces the 40-year-old boiler that has served the club since it was set up. The new court heaters and insulation will make the club a much better place to play, and will hopefully encourage new members.

'As part of the Sport England grant, we have to try and attract new members, but as a club that has always been one of our top aims. We want to encourage people from Okehampton and beyond to get involved in what is a great game.

'Racquetball is the fastest growing racquet sport in the UK. For those who might be worried about technique, racquetball is an easier game to grasp, with a ball that bounces more and allows people to have longer rallies.'

Following their grant, Okehampton Squash and Racquetball Club is encouraging new members to take up these two sports. All equipment will be supplied and free sessions are provided for prospective members.

There is a club night on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm, and a new Tuesday evening club for racketball from 7pm to 9pm.
