TAVISTOCK Bowls Club had mixed fortunes in knock out competitions recently, the men winning their Littleton Cup match while the ladies were beaten in the Top Club competition.

The men's match against City of Plymouth on the Hoe was achieved thanks to a convincing win by Eric Stevens and his rink of Pat Sykes, Norman Paramor and Tony Coombs.

The ladies' cup game at Plymstock was a much tougher proposition with the result resting on almost the last wood of the match.

In league matches the roles were reversed with the men losing heavily to a strong Civil Service match while the ladies beat the ladies of the same club. The men could not muster a winning rink in a match in which the opposition were out to avenge a defeat by Tavistock earlier in the season.

The ladies were helped by a good win by Marion Allen and her rink of Betty Browse, Gill Saunders and Marlene Paramor.

Wins at Kingsbridge and Yealmpton were also achieved by them in the league.

In friendlies the weather again caused a match to be abandoned, this time after ten ends at Looe; at the time the score was a draw.

On Saturday Okehampton were the visitors for a match of four men's and two ladies' rinks. Tavistock won both matches with the men having a good win for Rob Bowhay and his rink of Tony Coombs, Derek Bradford and Gordon Northey.

Catrina Meek made her debut as a skip with a good win as did Joan Northey.

The other ladies who helped with the win were Shirley Blackburn, Ann Doidge, Audrey Northam, Marlene Paramor, Vi Southern and Jenny Aldridge.

Tom Sharp's rink of Tony Coombs, Lawrie Smith and Shirley Blackburn with the best rink score ensured a draw against Paignton Torbay.
