METAL mining around Dartmoor in the 18th and 19th centuries will be the subject of a talk organised by the Dartmoor Society on November 23.

The talk 'Environment, tradition and adventure: Metal mining on and around Dartmoor in the 18th and 19th centuries' will be given by Dr Phil Newman, a former field archaeologist, at the Dolphin Hotel in Bovey Tracey from 7pm to 9pm.

Dr Newman's talk will be the fourth of the Dartmoor Society's public research lectures. These are intended to bring the results of new research on Dartmoor topics to members and a wider public audience to generate support and income for the Dartmoor Society's own Research Fund.

Dr Tom Greeves, chairman of the Dartmoor Society, said: 'The story of mining on Dartmoor for tin, copper, iron, lead etc is many centuries old. It is not possible to fully understand and appreciate Dartmoor without knowing something of this remarkable human endeavour.'

Admission to the talk, advance bookings only, is £7.50 for members and £9 for non-members, to include refreshments. To book, send a cheque payable to 'The Dartmoor Society', to The Dartmoor Society, PO Box 38, Tavistock, Pl19 0XJ, with your name, address and email or phone number, and the number of places required.
