THERE is a chance for walkers to explore the mining heritage and once lucrative daffodil farming industry of the Tamar Valley with a free guided ramble on Wednesday March 21. Organised by Caradon District Council, the Buttspill Mine and Daffodil Ramble is one of a series of monthly walks. The day starts at 10am in Bere Alston in the car park next to the parish hall. Botanist Martin Summers and local historian Len Copley will lead the walk from the village down to the former daffodil farm at Tuckermarsh, overlooking Calstock and the River Tamar. Following lunch at the Edgcumbe Hotel in Bere Alston, the walk resumes with a visit to the 12th century Buttspill lead and silver mine, returning to Bere Alston via Buttspill Wood and Tuckermarsh Quay at around 3.30pm. The walk is around four and a half miles long and includes muddy tracks and rough terrain. It is free of charge, but places need to be booked. Contact Pat Gormley on 01579 348749.
