EMERGENCY crews worked overnight to prevent a major pollution incident in West Devon, after a tanker leaked 2,000 litres of milk following a road traffic collision on the A30. The incident occurred around 8pm on the eastbound carriageway of the A30 at Sourton. A firecrew from Hatherleigh and two from Okehampton attended the incident ? and a further support crew was also called in from Exeter. Officers from the Environment Agency worked through the night on a damage limitation exercise, as the milk, which would be fatal to fish, ran off the carriageway and into a nearby waterway. The driver of the car was taken to hospital in Plymouth suffering a broken arm and head injuries. An Environment Agency spokesman said: ?Milk causes problems when it starts to break down in the water. ?It produces a bacteria which starves the water of oxygen.? It was hoped Tuesday night?s heavy rain would help dlilute the milk spillage.
