PLYMOUTH Motor Club members Mike Perkin and Alf Chanter are set to tackle the high speed rally stages of the forthcoming Richard Burns Memorial Rally held in Norfolk on the Saturday and Sunday.

Richard Burns was the only English World Rally champion in recent years and sadly died aged only 34 years from a brain tumour in 2005. The event is run in conjunction with a number of motorsport based charities and is hoping to use funds raised from the rally to go towards the Richard Burns Foundation, whose aims are to inspire and support people with serious injury and illness.

Mike Perkin, who is an electrical contractor from Tavistock, was the 1999 South West tarmac rally champion, and the 2000/2001 national champion in his previous car, has recently bought and fully rebuilt an ex works Ford Puma rally car originally built by Ford for an attack on the 2002 Junior world rally series.

The car features the latest six speed gearbox and a full race 2000cc engine giving them 260 bhp.

The team are using the charity event as a test for the new car with a view to undertaking the South West championship for 2009, where Perkin is hopeful of taking a series win once again.
