STAFF at construction group Midas have set themselves the challenge of raising £22,000 for their newly chosen charity of the year — CLIC, Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood.

The Midas group, which employs more than 400 people, started a charity fundraising committee last year which raised over £16,000 for the Children's Hospice South West.

This year Midas has set a target of raising £22,000 completely to fund a CLIC play specialist for a year.

Charity committee chair Marie Tremlett, from Bere Alston, said: 'We have chosen CLIC as our charity of the year because it offers practical, financial and emotional support to families with children suffering from cancer or leukaemia.

'We have arranged for payroll giving, which enables staff to donate money tax-free straight out of their monthly pay packet and we are busy identifying fundraising events for anyone to participate in.'

Chris Banting, CLIC fundraising manager, said: 'We are delighted that Midas have chosen CLIC as their Charity of the Year. We have many ready-made events for their staff to take part in and we look forward to helping with their own fundraising plans.'

To celebrate the start of a year of fund raising initiatives, Midas invited seven-year-old Grace, who is receiving treatment for cancer, to join staff on the site of the new Michelmore offices in Exeter to watch a giant mobile self-erect crane in operation — to Grace's delight she soon found out that operating the crane was child's play via its remote control box.
