A MILLENNIUM book of messages to Prime Minister Tony Blair has been started in Tavistock.

The book, in which people are invited to record their feelings about Third World debt, has been organised by the Tavistock group of the Jubilee 2000 campaign.

Elizabeth Turner, spokesperson for the group, said she hoped many people would make their comments to the Prime Minister to record the continued wish that the UK should match the US and cancel all debts owed to this country unilaterally.

'The Jubilee 2000 campaign continues up to the end of the year 2000 and there is much to do before the poorest will feel any sense of release from the chains of debt which enslave them,' said Mrs Turner.

She said the local branch of the group had attended a public meeting earlier this year with West Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett on the debt issue.

Mrs Turner and Anna Musgrave went to London for the annual meeting of the national campaign, and Mrs Musgrave took part in a 'trumpet the treasury' along with 4,000 others recently.

There will be a vigil at Tavistock Parish Church for 25 hours, 25 days before the new Millennium. This will start at 7pm on Sunday December 5 and end at 8pm on Monday December 6 — 25 Tavistock citizens will fast during this time.

'The national and global campaign in which Tavistock is an active participant, has made much progress. The Millennium book will, we hope, keep up the pressure,' said Mrs Turner.
