AT the end of the first half of the Plymouth and District League season Yelverton Ladies C tennis team were at the top of Division 5, after a great 7-2 win against close rivals Devonshire C at the Devonshire Club.
Jenny Kay, Di Mayne, Liz Falconer and Niki Gabb all played extremely well and have been awarded a merit award by the league for their win against the previously unbeaten Devonshire C.
In their other matches in the first half of the season the C team won 8-2 at Ivybridge E and Russell Avenue, drew 4-4 with St Mellion B and lost 3-6 to St Budeaux D.
Thanks were also expressed to Joy Tynan, Lyn Jones, Angie Lynch and Ann Short who have helped the C team to the top of the league.
In Division 3 Torpoint have dropped out of the league leaving the ladies B team with only four opponents to play.
The first match of the season against Mannamead B was abandoned because of rain with Yelverton leading 4-1.
The ladies beat the girls of Hill Lane 8-1 and lost to St Budeaux 2-6 when the lights went out before the match was completed.
In a top of the table clash against Whiteford Road at home they won 7-3, with Angie Lynch and Shirley Every taking maximum points and Ann Short and last minute substitute Joy Tynan gaining 3 points having played a marathon 54 games during the two matches.

The Ladies A team in Division 1 have struggled to keep a settled team because of injury and unavailability but are holding their own and are in the middle of the division at the half way stage of the season.
Helen Smith, Karen Gasche, Julia Whetton and newly promoted to the A team squad, Fiona Spreadbury, have been helped out by Wendy Sharland, who stood in at the last minute against Ivybridge, and Tizzy Shobrook.
The results have been mixed with a 4-4 draw against Mannamead A, an 8-1 win against St Mellion A, a 5-5 draw with Ivybridge B and losses against Ivybridge A, 1-8, and St Budeaux A,3-7.
In the P and D Mixed Knockout Cup Yelverton were beaten by St Budeaux.
The club is at present in the middle of the annual summer tournament with the finals being played on July 10.
A date for the diary of all Yelverton members past and present is October 16, when the club will celebrate being 20 years old with a party in Yelverton Memorial Hall. More details will follow later.
