TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club ladies' section did justice to the new Bryan Parker Memorial Trophy competition last week when nine of the 12 ladies who entered this mixed singles contest succeeded in defeating male opponents.

Tuesday saw a Tavistock mixed team travel to local rivals, Callington, and lose the match 96-92 despite winning two of the five rinks played, and drawing another.

Skip Arthur Worth led his team of George Barrand, Audrey Northam and David Perry to a narrow 21-20 victory while skip Mike Allen saw his team of Dorice Hicks, Stan Finn and Derek Bradford win 24-18.

Skip Gordon Northey and his team achieved a hard fought 16-16 draw.

The men's section's Wednesday evening county trophy fixture at home to Devonport Park resulted in a comprehensive 98-60 victory for Tavistock, who won all four rinks played.

Skip Eric Stevens saw his team of Pat Sykes, Roy Northam and Tony Coombs win 17-16, while Der Saunders led his team of John Smith, Norman Paramor and Sandy Sanders to a 28-12 victory.

Rob Bowhay, Phil Jury and Colin Craven supported skip Mike Allen in his 26-15 win and skip Ron Cooper guided his team of Geoff Cork, Bernie Downs and Clifford Hicks to a 27-17 victory.

Saturday's visit by a Devon County ladies' team resulted in a narrow 111-107 win for the visitors with Tavistock managing to win only two of the six rinks played.

Skip Ron Cooper led his team of Vic Doidge, Wallace Northey and Roy Northam to an impressive 25-11 win, while skip Der Saunders and his team of Clifford Hicks, John Smith and Derek Bradford managed to maintain a two-shot advantage to win 18-16.

Losing skips were Eric Stevens (18-20), Stuart Doidge (15-24), Mike Allen (19-21) and Rob Bowhay, who at the halfway stage was winning 10-4, only managed to pick up four shots after tea to go down 14-21.

The ladies' home game on Wednesday against Yealmpton results in a 36-37 victory for the visitors.

Tavistock skip Jean Flay saw her team of Marion Allen, Marlene Paramor and Yvonne Meneer win 22-19, but skip Betty Browse and her team of Freda Issac, Gill Saunders and Hazel Lovell were defeated 14-18.

The ladies' friendly game at Okehampton on Thursday resulted in a 40-39 victory for Tavistock, thanks to skip Marion Allen and her team of Audrey Northam, Pauline Finn and Dorice Hicks, who won 23-16.

Skip Betty Browse saw her rink of Anne Doidge, Shirley Thorrington and Jean Flay go down 17-23.
