REFERENCE your article on the town clock (June 10). The chap who used to wind the clock up was my father, Michael Heartfield. He wound the clock up from sometime in the 1960s up until his death in 1985.
My father was a watchmaker who had a shop in West Street, right opposite the church. He took over the job from another watchmaker, Mr Archie Mills who had a shop further up West Street.
My father told me he was paid £80 a year for his services. He had to wind it up twice a week. In the early 1970s when I was a young teenager I used to wind it up for my father on a Saturday which he used to pay me 50p for.
Also, I remember in the 1970s the clock and the hands were taken for refurbishment. When they were put back in the tower I remember going up into the tower with my father to synchronise the hands on the four faces. I hope you find this information of interest.
