A PUBLIC meeting is being held next week to gauge support for The Wharf arts and entertainment centre in Tavistock, which is currently up for sale. Many people have voiced support for the centre and want to see it continue in its present form with music, theatre, films and performances by local groups. There have been suggestions that a community trust be formed to take on the leasehold, which is up for sale for £80,000. Chairman of the Tavonians Theatre Company, Alison Wright, said following letters in the Times from herself and the chairman of the Friends of The Wharf expressing concern, people had been very supportive. Mrs Wright said: ?There is a lot of goodwill out there towards The Wharf, so I have taken the next step and arranged a meeting at Tavistock Community College where we can gauge support and discuss possible ways forward.? The meeting, in the Ndeeba room on Wednesday April 12 at 7.30pm, will be chaired by chairman of the community college governors Alex Woods and be attended by members of the Friends of The Wharf organisation. The decision to put The Wharf on the market was announced last month after two of the four volunteer directors expressed a wish to retire. It has been run by sister companies CAM (The Wharf) Ltd and CAM Trading Ltd for ten years and uniquely in the world of arts, the centre has never received revenue funding. Instead it has survived on cash saving, goodwill and a tight budget. Mrs Wright, who performs with the Tavonians twice a year in the centre, said the community was very lucky to have an arts facility like The Wharf. She said: ?We do not want to lose it either because no-one wants to run a non-profit making business or because there is apathy that a community group cannot be formed to take it over. ?We want to see if the community is of a mind to do something about it.?
