SCHOOLS across West Devon are competing in the Yellow Woods Challenge 2005 ? the educational and fun environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust, working with West Devon Borough Council. Kirk, the recycling bug and campaign mascot, is urging schoolchildren and their families to bring old Yellow Pages directories to school for recycling into animal bedding by the Cornwall Paper Company. Participating primary schools to date are Gulworthy, Mary Tavy and Brentor, Meavy, Tavistock and St Andrew?s at Buckland Monachorum. Schools that collect the most directories per pupil will win cash prizes from Yellow Pages. For every pound awarded to schools, a matching pound will be given to the Woodland Trust to support its new tree planting campaign, Tree For All, and enable hundreds of schools to plant native tree saplings in their grounds. Jane Savage, West Devon?s waste reduction and recycling officer, said: ?This is the third year that we are recycling Yellow Pages directories with schools. ?We hope it has become something teachers, parents and pupils all look forward to in the school calendar. It not only keeps old directories out of landfill, but also helps us deliver lots of other recycling messages to schools.? Participating schools will be collecting the old directories from now until March 11.
