A TAVISTOCK man has been honoured for for his work in Afghanistan.

Brigadier David Hook, 48, was awarded the CBE in the recent Armed Forces Operational Awards for his role as Deputy Commander Operations, Regional Command South in Afghanistan, working with the NATO International Security and Assistance Force.

His citation reads: 'He made a valuable contribution in a high tempo and complex operational environment, melding a disparate multinational team into a cohesive headquarters.'

Of his award, Brigadier Hook said: 'I am truly honoured to be awarded the CBE, but it is reflection of the great team I was privileged to work with in the most demanding area of Afghanistan.

'The award belongs as much to them as it does to me and I know that collectively we contributed to a situation that is slowly but surely improving, and handed over an approach that will benefit Afghanistan in the long run.'

Brigadier Hook is currently head of Navy resources and planning based at Whitehall in London. He began his military career in 1981, serving primarily within 3 Commando Brigade, with appointments in 42, 45 Commando and 3 Commando Brigade Headquarters. This period included operational tours in Northern Ireland and Northern Iraq.

Brigadier Hook is married to Diane, they have two daughters, Kara Louise, 20, and Naomi Claire, 17.

He is a keen kayaker and has raced the Devizes to Westminster race twice and completed the 760 km Yukon River Quest in 2006 – recognised as the longest canoe race in the world.
