AT a sun-drenched Tavistock Rugby Club, it was both Whitchurch and Meavy that emerged victorious from a field of 15 primary schools at the annual tag-rugby tournament for the Tavistock Area Learning Community.
In pool A of the designated 'small schools' draw, there were there were creditable victories for Milton Abbot and Gulworthy over a spirited Princetown outfit. However, it was a fearsome and fluid Meavy Primary School who booked their place in the final managing to reap the benefits of their magnificent running rugby style of play.
Lady Modiford's Primary School dominated pool 'B', recording four comfortable victories to book a showdown with Meavy.
A marriage of teamwork, flair and outright pace ensured the impressive Lifton a playoff berth at the expense of hard-working Lamerton, Horrabridge, and fair-play award winners Mary Tavy. However, a 4-1 reverse ensured that it was Milton Abbot who finished third overall.
In the final, Lady Modifords put in a determined performance but it was Meavy who ran out 4-2 winners, finishing the day by retaining the championship trophy for 2009.
The 'large schools' tournament saw a total of six schools battle for honours. St Andrew's beat Tavistock 5-2 but then went down 3-5 to Bickleigh Down, who ended up fourth.
St Andrews then had a superb 5-5 draw with Woolwell.
It was Whitchurch who won the day with their own unique brand of cohesive, team-driven rugby edging out runners-up Tavistock. Thanks must go to Simon Beatty, Tavistock Rugby Football Club and the students from Tavistock College who all helped with the staging of the event.
Organiser Chrissie Bassett said it was an excellent tournament played with great spirit and quality by all the teams.
