I READ with disgust that the bandstand is to be destroyed in the Meadows.
When was this all decided, were any of the people of Tavistock asked their opinion?
Over the years everything beautiful in the Meadows has been destroyed. The two pavilions were knocked down. The paddling pool, that we all enjoyed as children, was filled in and made a play ground because the council were worried children would drown.
I am 61 years old and my generation all played in it without coming to any harm.
All the beautiful flower beds with roses and rhododendrons were dug up. I have lovely pictures of my young son standing in front of them.
Next to go was a unique lily pond with a beautiful fountain, the pond brimming with lovely water lilies and wild life, newts and frogs, which my children loved to look at, and now the poor bandstand is to be destroyed.
I can remembers as a little girl being told by my mum that the Meadows started off as a field and that is exactly what it is being turned back to.
I am glad my mum is not around to see it.
Youngsters might need places to go but I expect it will soon be abandoned as they move on to something else. Why has everything got to be destroyed to keep up with the present day?
I am going to go down to the Meadows and take a picture quickly before another unique thing is destroyed in the cause of progress.

l No firm decision has been taken to destroy the bandstand.
At the moment, its removal and replacement with a more modern structure is a proposal being discussed by the town council — Editor
