ONE of the oldest British-built fairground rides in existence was re-opened to the public last Thursday, during a special celebration event at the Fairground Heritage Centre at Lifton.
The two mayors were accompanied by the leader of North Devon District Council Cllr Roy Lucas, and Ramon Henderson, senior vice president of the Showmen's Guild.
After the opening, the civic party, along with invited guests, took an inaugural ride, on the 'Rodeo Switchback' which has a centre dating from the 1880s and the rotating part was built in 1906.
The cars were carved at Burton on Trent in the 1920s and feature the Cowboy actor Tom Mix, a star of the silent screen.
The machine has undergone extensive engineering work during the latter part of last year to enable it to be brought up to the rigid safety standards set down for fairground rides.
The 'Rodeo Switchback' will be working every weekend, and at other times by arrangement. The Fairground Heritage Centre is open Thursday to Mondays inclusive from 10.30am to 5.30pm.
