AUCTIONS, raffles and a sponsored half-marathon were among the activities undertaken by staff and councillors at West Devon Borough Council over the last 12 months to raise almost £1,250 for the mayor?s chosen charity. Mayor Christine Grills (right) handed over the bumper cheque to Mrs Sue Richards, of the Plymouth branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, last week. Cllr Grills said the charity was close to her heart. ?About five years ago a dear friend was diagnosed with the disease and it was heartbreaking to see how rapidly it progressed in that short time, and the effect it has had on her family. ?The association provides valuable assistance in so many ways to help everyone affected by MND and the work it does is so supportive.? Mrs Richards said the money would be used to buy useful equipment for MND sufferers. She said: ?It?s marvellous. We?re very grateful to all the staff and councillors for their hard work.?
