A CHARITY established for people with mental health issues has been chosen as the Tavistock mayor's 'chosen charity of the year'. Mayor Cllr Harry Smith announced at a full council meeting last Tuesday (July 15) that he has selected Make a Difference at Trident House, on Taylor Square in Tavistock, to support for his second term as mayor. Make a Difference was set up for people who have experienced or continue to experience mental health issues — and provide a place to go and take part in activities, make new friends, or enjoy a cup of tea. Cllr Smith said: 'I am supporting this charity because I believe that the provision of a welcoming and safe place for people who have experienced or who are currently experiencing mental health problems is vital to them gaining new skills and understanding the importance of working together within the team.' Sandy Edney, co-founder of Make a Difference, said: 'We are really thrilled and honoured that he would choose us. It would be great to work beside him and raise awareness for problems with mental health.' Housed in a three–storey building, the centre features a large social room, a games room, computer suite, art room. a kitchen, and a garden area. Make a Difference offers a wide range of activities, including groups for music, computer skills, arts and crafts, and decoupage and other crafts. • Volunteers are being sought for Make a Difference's arts and crafts activities.
