THE inaugural winners of the West Devon Mayoral Awards ?which mark the achievements of individuals in the borough ? are being honoured at an event tomorrow (Friday).

The innovative scheme has been initiated by West Devon Mayor Cllr Richard Phillips to promote the good work of key residents and organisations within the borough.

Several nominations were made for the awards and Cllr Phillips and Deputy Mayor Mrs Denise Herrod-Taylor faced a tough decision in choosing the worthy winners.

The first award to a young person under the age of 18, goes to Tavistock student Zoe Viggers of Bere Alston.

Zoe, 17, is the first chairperson of Tavistock and District Youth Council and is particularly active in promoting the profile of young people within the area and campaigning to improve facilities to meet their needs.

She is also involved in the Guides, Explorer Scouts and helps with the annual Abbots Way Walk.

She was nominated as an ?excellent example of a young person wiling to present young people?s views in a constructive way and always willing to help others.?

The second award, to an individual over 18 or a firm/organisation, goes to Tavistock town crier and mace bearer Bob Rose.

Bob, who lives in Tavistock, represents the town and West Devon across the country and is ?totally committed and utterly dedicated.?

Bob and Zoe will be presented with their awards at West Devon?s Civic Dinner tomorrow.

Cllr Phillips said he was delighted at the high standard of entries.

?It?s heartening to know that so many people are out there in West Devon carrying out such a lot of good work,? he said.

?The award scheme has been such a success this year that it will continue annually from now on.

?I hope it will be supported because it is so important to highlight the achievements of so many people.?
