THE role of the town mayor was the topic for discussion at this week's Okehampton Probus meeting – by the Okehampton mayor himself.
Cllr the Rev Mike Davies was the guest speaker at this week's Probus meeting. Probus clubs are organisations for men and women who have retired and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests.
Cllr Davies spoke of his time within the Civil Service prior to working for two of the world's leading accountancy firms, a smaller regional practice and then setting up a business in Okehampton.
He spoke of his becoming a Christian at the age of 25 and his love of great reformers such as William Wilberforce and Martin Luther King Junior. Cllr Davies also spoke on the two distinct roles of the town mayor being a civic and ceremonial role and also chairman of the town council.
Cllr Davies said afterwards: 'I was aware that within the audience were two previous Okehampton town mayors together with our previous town clerk. It was good that they could add some of their experiences.'
The mayor was introduced to the meeting by former town clerk Don Bent and the vote of thanks following the talk was given by former town mayor Ray Vallance.
