IN her role as President of the Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club, Tavistock Town mayor, Cllr Jenny Metcalf, declared the club bowling green open on Saturday. She then started the season off by bowling the first ?wood? of the year. The green, which looked the worse for wear at the end of the 2004 season, had been restored to good playing condition thanks to club member John Smith and his helpers. In her opening address Cllr Metcalf praised the club for maintaining such a high standard and wished them good fortune in the coming season. The mayor then stayed to watch the bowling and enjoyed tea provided by the ladies of the club. Members attending were able to view the fixture list for the forthcoming season. The club will be involved in some 76 men?s and mixed matches, 34 ladies only games, plus club, league and county level, team and individual competitions. Away fixtures include Teignmouth, Paignton, Barnstaple, Looe, Totnes, Exmouth and Wadebridge. The club will also be holding its open tournament on Sunday June 12, when more than 20 teams from around Devon compete for prize money thanks to sponsorship from local businesses. Members of the public are invited to come along and watch any of the matches and anyone interested in taking up the sport and/or attending the Open Days are invited to contact club captain Norman Paramor on 01822 612491.
