Feniton v Yelverton

Bohemians

THE Yelverton Bohemians quickly overcame last week's disappointing cancellation to win a competitive match against Feniton, Robbie Bennett once again starring with bat and ball.

Skipper Jez Stokes asked the visitors to bat and the opening attack of Bennett and Iain Cunningham did the business yet again, reducing Feniton to 25 for 3 off 10 overs.

Captain Matt Kingdom (29) provided the only early resistance as the Bohemians took wickets regularly aided by some superb ground fielding and three top-drawer slip catches by Paul Farnham.

Every Yelverton bowler contributed, with Bennett, Mushy Vince and Matthew Tamsett each taking 2 wickets. Cunnigham impresses the most with his spiteful in-duckers finishing with 10-3-25-3. J French (23) and B Allen (22) provided a late rally but the Bohemians had dominated the first half of the game to reduce Feniton to 130 all out in 37 overs.

Feniton rallied after the tea interval with some high quality opening bowling by the unlucky R Witton and J French (16-9-23-4) who reduced the hosts to 47 for 4 off 16 overs.

The Bohemians have no tail, so didn't panic even when the change bowling of S Bright (10-1-38-3) continued to apply serious pressure. It is fair to say that the going was tough and slow, but the versatile Bennett, who has already scored 50no off five overs this season, batted for 42 overs for his 49no to steer the Bohemians home, showing his maturity and versatility this year. He was joined by Stokes who dropped down the order to be there in the pressurised final overs.

The second half of this match provided Yelverton with some real challenges, but this team has strength in depth and was able to cope with a strong Feniton fight-back. The Bohemians gained another 18 points and remain second.

l 2009 Cup holders Yelverton Typhoons began the defence of the U13s Cup with a win over Plymouth Peverell in their first round tie. Yelverton batted first and openers Ben Pearson and Jay Warner batted steadily before Warner fell for 22, bowled S Colmar with the score on 66.  Joined by Henry Lopes, Pearson was unluckily run out for 43 with the score on 102 when the bowler Ben Singlehurst deflected the ball onto the stumps at the non-strikers end as he was backing-up.

Skipper Douie joined Lopes in the middle and the pair scored at a run a ball before Douie was run-out by a direct hit looking for a second run.  The Typhoons closed on 113-3 off their 20 overs with Lopes 16 no and Will Johnson 1 no.

The Plymouth reply hit a set-back in the first over as skipper S Colmar was run-out after quick thinking by keeper Pearson saw him throw down the stumps with a direct hit at the strikers end.  Reburn was the next to go for 1, caught behind by Pearson off Lopes to leave the score 12-2.  This was followed by Fennell for 1, also caught by Pearson off the bowling of Warner.

The next pair of Claire Varcoe and Barney Couldwell put on a fourth wicket partnership of 31 to get Plymouth back on track before Varcoe was run-out following a great throw-in from the boundary by Johnson.  Cummings helped Couldwell put on 33 for the fifth wicket, but with the score on 76, Cummings was caught off the bowling of Matthew Smith by skipper Douie.  J Dodge also fell in the same over to leave Plymouth on 76-6.  Singlehurst was bowled by an excellent yorker from Johnson and then Lopes picked up the wickets of Couldwell, 31, and Collins caught by Matthew Smith at mid-on for 7.

The Plymouth innings finished on 99 to leave the Yelverton Tyhoons winners by 14 runs.

Henry Lopes finished with a superb 4-1-8-3.
