AFTER only 10 overs of play was possible last Saturday against touring side Littlebourne the weather relented sufficiently on Sunday to allow a full 40 over fixture in the South Devon League when Buckfastleigh visited Rew Meadow. Put into bat they began steadily, reaching 90 off 18 overs before Patel (27) was smartly stumped by Johnny Carter off Chris Gomersall, having added 64 for the second wicket with Declan Schroeder. Despite pulling a hamstring Schroeder continued to bat powerfully, hitting eight 4?s and a six before being third out for 77 with the score on 131. Captain Will Sykes maintained the acceleration with well-timed batting all round the wicket, so that even though wickets fell steadily at the other end the score mounted at seven an over throughout the final 20 overs. Eventually Sykes reached a well-deserved century off the last ball of the innings, also with eight 4?s and a six, leaving Buckfastleigh on a formidable 252 for eight. With both Belstone openers back in the pavilion by the fourth over with only 12 on the board Dennis Edwards (36) and Wayne Pearce (29) began a careful recovery which saw the score reach 83 at the half way stage. Phil Woods, supported by useful contributions from the lower middle order, then began a ferocious onslaught which saw 105 runs added in the next ten overs as the match burst back into life. In 62 balls he rattled up a career-best 90 with six 4?s and five 6?s swung high over square leg. Only when Woods was seventh out with the score on 197 could Buckfastleigh breathe easily and finally record a 33 run victory. Belstone man-of-the-match: Phil Woods.
