Carlsberg South Western League Newquay 0 Callington Town 1 CALLINGTON produced the shock of the day in the league on Saturday with a hard fought 1-0 victory at Mount Wise which dented the home side's chase for a top seven finish. After last week's awful performance against Launceston at The Parc, Geoff Battam's charges were looking to show that it was just a one off and so it proved with a much better show from Callington's youthful side. With the wind and slight slope in their favour in the first half, it was Newquay who settled better in the early stages and both John Allen and Lee Rickard saw good chances go to waste, while Town's keeper Dan Johnson was once again in tremendous form, saving three times from close range. The half time whistle brought a brief respite for Callington and when the second half started, they looked like a different side as they began to push Newquay back. Teenager Dan Discombe was very unlucky not to break the deadlock on the hour when his delightful curling shot from the left was brilliantly palmed away by Scott Palmer. The keeper could do nothing shortly afterwards when Matt Martin fired home from fully 30 yards after the impressive Dan Murdoch had been up-ended on the right. Man of the match for Callington Chris Gerry created another chance shortly afterwards as he found Discombe but his goalbound shot was somehow steered over the bar by Palmer and, although the home side had the pressure late on, more squandered opportunities saw Callington keep the lead and leave the north coast with three very valuable points. l Callington Town first team take on Porthleven at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday. Craig Jobey gave Town the lead early in the second half from 30 yards and then, Darren Benfield added a second to give them breathing space. The visitors got a controversial late consolation through Dean Hawking with the home side appealing for offside, but they held on to move up three places in the league.
