DREWSTEIGNTON jeweller Ann Powell has won an award and cash prize for her collection of work submitted for the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts Open Exhibition.

Anne, who has been making jewellery for 20 years, received the Brufords Jewellery Prize for five pieces of work based on marine images.

Her intricate designs feature moonstones, pearls and labradorite finished with silver and gold.

The jeweller said it was nice to have her work recognised, especially by a company like Brufords who had been the foremost jewellers and silversmiths in the South West for more than 100 years.

The South West Academy exhibition is in two sections this year with one half being staged at the Exeter Phoenix Centre and the other within the Royal Albert Museum in Exeter.

Both sections of the exhibition are open to visitors from Monday to Saturday until September 1 and Anne currently has more of her work on show at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in Bovey Tracey.

There was double excitement in Anne's household on the day of the judging as her partner, Will Witham, won a first prize at the South West Forest Woodwork Exhibition for his wooden whale puzzle.

Will's prize was for the most aesthetic piece of woodwork and he was also runner-up in the functional category with a leaf mirror.
